taca fees?

Hi, I need to buy a Lima-Piura plane ticket. Can I buy a ticket at the promo fee without getting hit with the $178 surcharge? I've heard that charge is only for Lima-Cuzco. Any experiences? The plane ticket is my best option, but I can't risk a problem in the airport. I have to work the following mo...

Re: Being Called Fat. Sensitivity issues.

I am really enjoying these stories and feeling so much better! I actually felt a little silly for getting so upset about it, but I am glad to see that it is a real thing! Another friend suggested too that since many Americans are just plain built bigger, we look a lot bigger to the Peruvians. I thou...

Re: Being Called Fat. Sensitivity issues.

Americorps- Nope, no feelings of harm from being blunt. It bothers me most that I have let myself get to a point where I cannot ACCEPT that I am in another culture. I think that part makes me more mad than the part where they call me fat. It's the part that I can't just blow it off lately. I appreci...

Being Called Fat. Sensitivity issues.

Okay so after 7 months of living here, I am way past my breaking point. It all started in June, when my boyfriend's two aunts asked me if I was pregnant. The next day, my landlady brought me her old maternity clothes. At that point, I realized the Peruvians thought I was fat. No one has every called...

Re: Questions about relationship with Peruvian woman

Whoops, sorry about the misread there, Roger. I'm not nearly as familiar with that area. Definitely support the unique experience for your son though. Actually, this is a random thought, but when I was looking for programs for my masters, a few schools required significant time of living abroad. Aca...

Re: pickup ultimate frisbee games in Lima?

http://www.facebook.com/groups/21837704058/ There is a small, small, very small movement towards ultimate in Lima. Sadly I am in Piura so I am unable to enjoy this. They play weekly though. I am looking to start an ultimate camp for a week or so in Lima or los campos near Piura. If your husband has ...

Re: Questions about relationship with Peruvian woman

I definitely like that you have a great sense of adventure! My two big warnings: 1). Moving your son for a year will be hard. I go both ways on that. First, I think it is a fabulous experience for him because he will certainly grow and mature and have a superior comprehension as to what lies beyond ...

Thanksgiving!

So it's Thanksgiving soon and I am interested to know if anyone is planning on "observing" the day or if you'll just let it pass. Has anyone tried to make any traditional dishes here? I was thinking I might like to try and make a couple traditional dishes for my boyfriend and his mom over ...

Re: Bilingual Visitor interested in Piura ESL opportunities

Hi there! I know this was posted awhile ago, but if you're still here, I'm happy to help! I live in Piura, and your best bet is to look at the universities, Universidad de Cesar Vallejo or Universidad de Piura. I am not sure about UAP or the National university. I also heard rumor of the Montessori ...

Shamless Gringo Treat Day...Advice Wanted!

Hello all! I am venturing to Lima to pick-up my Dad at the airport on Saturday night. While he is here I will of course treat him to Peruvian delights, but I have a good 14 hours in Lima before he comes. I plan on using these hours to shamelessly indulge in all the treats I cannot find in Piura. I p...

Moving in 12 days, advice wanted!

Hey all! I am moving to Peru for at least a year on May 9. In this process of packing (and graduating college) I am looking for all advice offered! I will be traveling for three weeks with a class and then heading off on my own to Talara. Anything you didn't think to bring to Peru and wish you had? ...
