We've all seemed to come to the same conclusion the hard way here; you will not get your deposit back. Don't pay last month's rent, and then the rest of your deposit goes to the landlord. It's a horrible practice, but it seems to be the way it is here.

I spoke no Spanish when I got here, and after a couple of months doing the English tutoring hustle, I found a job teaching at an international school. However, the pay is much much lower then what I was used to in the States, so keep that in mind.

First, I can not say that Social Security will suffice. I'm finding information, piece by piece, but I have a feeling that it's going to be a long and drawn out process. The SS form also has to be officially translated into Spanish either by a Peruvian consulate in the US or by a professional here. I have no idea where to go to get that done. Anyone else?

I doubt it, but I haven't done the border hop to Ecuador, only Chile.

I have heard that it's pretty shady up there, and you have to be more cautious. A friend went last October, and they overcharged him by 100 soles. Good luck!
