Things I STILL haven't gotten used to:

After a year and a half living in Peru, I've put together a short list of stuff I STILL haven't gotten used to: 1. Getting toilet paper before entering the bathroom. Typically, it's outside in the open area or even in the hallway. When will I learn?!?!? 2. Boarding a bus in motion. I just can't get ...

OK, Lloyd, you say you did the whole adoption process, but consider my dreams of adoption as "absurd." Care to clarify? You don't even know me, so why do you think I'm such a bad person? Why don't you tell me more about the adoption process, or refer me to a web-site or office. I think tha...

OK, I just had a less-controversial thought. Maybe as a "Peruvian insider" who "understands the system" (hehe, anybody who can understand the system here?) Maybe I could sort of walk a relative thru the foreign adoption process, and help with paperwork and things. I hadn't though...

As far as "giving a kid away" --- yeah, I know that sounds bad, but it was just my thought that it could be a good thing for everyone. And if it didn't work out, well I've always wanted more kids, and particularly I've always wanted to adopt a child in need. As far as becoming a citizen, e...

Within 9 months, I'll be a Peruvian citizen. One of the reasons I'm pursuing this is the possibility of adoption. I heard that it's free and relatively easy. Does anyone have any info? Re: Don't ever doubt the craziness of a combi driver!

If this ever happens again, flag down the bus as if you want to get in. That's the only possible way to make a combi driver stop - the hope of a paying passenger. Otherwise you're useless to them and there's no reason not to run you down.

Re: Peru enacts new abortion laws first time in 90 years

Good! I've been a little comforted by the apparent availability of illegal abortions, but this full-scale prohibition of abortion is too much! Especially when you know that effective birth control is out of many people's reach. But good if they're loosening up the law at least a bit.

You don't need legal paperwork to get a job. Only to get a job at an official company. But you can always teach English informally for the short term. That spousal paperwork takes a couple of months. Telemarketing is really underpaid here, and overworked, but you teaching English pays better. Just s...

Those are good ideas. I also forgot about the young women in the supermarkets that stand there in their brand-promoting bodysuits to draw attention to things like Colgate toothpaste and Gloria Milk. I kind of think that might be the worst job of all. It seems really uncomfortable and boring.

Yes, I'd recommend it. I believe it's airport policy that everyone must have a notarized letter to take a Peruvian child out of the country - regardless of circumstances. Your child might not be officially Peruvian, but it's probably better not to risk it.
