Re: Weakness in the $

The "Kadafi thing" was not a conspiracy (just one of many articles): http://levantreport.com/2016/01/04/new-hillary-emails-reveal-propaganda-executions-coveting-libyan-oil-and-gold/ But sure, all commercial paper is backed by "the good faith and credit of the people", that's why ...

Re: Weakness in the $

If I remember correctly, what came out of that "experiment" was that they learned they could get away with "price fixing". Soon after, they got off the Gold Standard and what you see today is the Dollar is backed by petroleum - hence the "petro-dollar" wars that you see...

We get them in "Madre Natura" who has stores in a couple different places (around Miraflores and such).

Re: Community

Thanks for the suggestion, but I don't really like the deserts Cieneguilla (would like something naturally green, with water, rain, snow :p, oh and trees! Where'd all the freakin' trees go?). Maybe Ancash, Oxapampa, Villa Rica? Good culture of people in those areas, but now it's starting to boom and...

Re: Can Openers

Good question, I have never seen one. You may get lucky and once a year Wong may import one or two. You can also try Surquillo, but I doubt they'd know what your talking about. Every Peruvian I know just jams a knife into the can - hence why you see a few missing fingers here and there :P (JK).

Re: Debating returning to Peru/critical Peruvians

Unfortunately, this video is spot on, and after living here almost 7 years, I can't stand the culture. All Peruvians seem nice... until they queue up or get in a line - then watch the pushing and shoving begin!

Re: Monsters in Peru

This is common with girls here - buyer beware! As they say, "It might be hard, but 'pinch it off'". I personally have no more compassion for the manipulative culture here. I do not donate to anyone on the street, unless I see they are really making an effort to make their life better or ha...

Re: Peruvian Customs, Importing to Peru, HELP

As a private person, I never pay any customs duties, not from SERPOST and not from coming in via airports. There is a certain Declaracion Jurada I use, but essentially there are no taxes on private property - not IGV, not anything. It was funny the first time the lady at SERPOST had to give me every...

Help! I am fed up with Lima (and everything around it)! I have looked everywhere but I cannot stand the way people live so close together packed in like rats. Is there any foreign communities (American, European, anything!) where people know how to live together uncrowded, design their housing to wo...

If there's no contract, then there's no obligation to pay. Show me the law that states otherwise.

Re: Weakness in the $

Peru has always been a part of the countries that are pegged to the dollar (via the Bretton Woods agreement). They exchange can never go below 2.5. Gringolandia is correct, and the only reason why the dollar keeps slightly surging is your seeing worldwide sell-off of silver and gold contracts to bri...

Re: Illegal for foreigners to join protests

The term of art used from the U.S. embassy is "public protests". The term "public" refers to "public servants" or those who work in a public office. So of course you cannot join a "public protest". However, you can join as many "private gatherings" a...

Re: Do not use UPS for receiving goods

I never pay import/customs duties. You are not aware of the law if your paying that. And I do typically import more than $200 worth of my property. Now, as for storage fees... complain! If they haven't notified you in a timely manner, they can be reported to REINIC. You can also ask to see their Lib...

Re: Over Stay

Dez, there is no requirement for filing U.S. taxes if you have no "source" of income from a "public office". If you don't understand U.S. taxes, I can help, but I don't see how that would prevent you from going home. No public servant can deny your right to go home.

Re: Over Stay

No one can "tax" you for going home. They tried this with me and I talked to a higher supervisor and went home. Now, I am married to a Peruana, so I can technically never "over stay". If you are having issues, talk with the U.S. (or your home) embassy and they will help you get t...
