Re: Brichero in Cusco

Hilarious! I think Peruvian criolladas deserve a special dedicated thread for unsuspecting newbie expats.

Re: when you invite a Peruvian to a restaurant lunch or dinner

My situation had nothing to do with "safety". The invitee was a male and this was a business meeting in broad daylight at a well-known restaurant. The surprise guest had no knowledge of the business topic and nothing to contribute besides ordering everything on the menu and scowling. Needl...

when you invite a Peruvian to a restaurant lunch or dinner

Why is it that the invitee often inexplicably shows up with an unexpected guest? Is this common with just the lower-class? do they not think it's offensive? It is so awkward, distracting and changes the dynamics of the meeting. I've read about this so-called custom and didn't think anything of it un...

Re: Getting Residency while owing past due child support

I have my passport, and im in another country. I have been here for 3 years. Thats not the problem. While you may have your passport in your physical possession, they are revoked electronically. You may be in for an unpleasant surprise when you: a) attempt to travel internationally b) attempt to mo...

Re: Getting Residency while owing past due child support

If you're in child support arrears in the amount of USD2,500 or more your US passport is automatically revoked. It's applied across the board, regardless of what state your case originated in. A revoked passport will show up as such in Interpol and they will likely confiscate it. The embassy will gi...

Re: Make $500 bringing our dog home for the holidays

This is a human interest story that involves Peru and the weak, if non-existent so-called ex-pat "community". Perhaps Peru This Week or other non-grinch type media would take it from here or perhaps a Facebook page is in order to cause a happy ending to this story with a holiday theme.

cringeworthy Peruvian names

I get that these are phonetic adaptations of western names and that most come from the police blotters:

Kinverly, Yeremi, Brayam, Leidy

Good luck.

I don't believe this chap would have resorted to posting here were that the case.

Re: I NEED HELP TO GO HOME

I'm surprised that in your post you don't mention any contact with your embassy. Google your country's emergency repatriation service and expect that they will require you to sign an "Undertaking To Repay" which basically entails you giving your embassy your passport, them giving you a loa...

Re: Why is the Peruvian (Western) expat community so weak?

I agree with your observation, although I don't know the reason why. Maybe no good leader-type person has yet arrived to spark potentially interested people into doing something that maters? I for one would LOVE to offer my professional skills to start a side business with someone, help other nativ...

Why is the Peruvian (Western) expat community so weak?

I have found the expat community to be very polarized, fragmented and occasionally downright hostile. Why is this so? Other immigrant communities form alliances and are far more industrious, they relay goods back and forth from their home countries, collaborate, establish business together by poolin...

Re: Naturalization Exam in DIGEMIN

An excellent source for dirt-cheap books to brush up on Peruvian history is the book market downtown...not sure what it's called but it's adjacent to the Mercado de las Mochilas and a fascinating place to visit. Many, many stalls filled with old books, new books and the vendors, if they don't have w...

I got married in Peru-thank you, forum contributors!

For over a year I've been planning my wedding (civil ceremony) in Peru with a short window to travel to Lima. I have to say that I never once had to post a question as every aspect and every complication with its respective solution has been posted here. Thanks to all of you and the wealth of inform...

I'm coming to Lima this Thursday and doing some last minute shopping in the San Francisco Bay Area. Would not mind bringing a pair or 2 if you want to PM me with a link to mainstream store style and size.
