If you’ve worked with a competent and trustworthy lawyer, please share your recommendations. Have you had a long time work relationship, or did you only use the lawyer for a specific issue? Does this lawyer speak any languages other than Spanish? Does this lawyer have any specific specialty, such as immigration or family law? Where are the law offices located?
Remember that other members might send you a private message requesting more information. Thanks for sharing!

I can highly recommend the attorney who I used for buying our departamento. He provided excellent client service and speaks flawless English always able to explain and interpret everything in a way that I completely understood. He made him self available whenever necessary for however long was necessary. In addition to handling my real estate transaction, he and his firm do a lot of work for business. Check our their web site for more information. Anyone can feel free to PM me for more information on the extra services he did for me. Contact details:

Thanks for posting your recommendations. I hired the services of Guillermo Castañeda Echegaray and have been extremely satisfied with the result.

I am British, currently living in Canada and trying unsuccessfully for over a year to obtain a Peruvian Police Clearance for my time living in Lima in the '90's. Guillermo guided me personally through the process every step of the way - always available by phone or e-mail and provided some great advice, resulting in a certificate in hand very quickly. I would thoroughly recommend his reliable, personal, fast service. Below his details again...

Dear Expats,

I am very glad every time there are more attorneys like me serving you in different areas of practice in Lima.

We started this way in 2007 and now are provinding legal services to expats also out of Lima, such as Piura and Tarapoto, and can do it anywhere nationwide.

Immigrations, Commercial, Labour, Family, Civil and even Criminal Law are among our areas of practice.

A couple suggestions when you are looking for an attorney in Peru:

- check his status at: www.sunat.gob.pe and see if he/she is a good tax payer;
- verify if he/she is "habilitado", an active member of the bar where he/she is practising law (in Lima ww.cal.org.pe);
- if you get or not SUNAT receipts for the fees payments;
- the law school where he/she got his academic degrees: PONTIFICIA UNIVERSIDAD CATOLICA DEL PERU, Universidad de Lima, Universidad Mayor de San Marcos, Universidad San Martín de Porras are the top ranked in Lima;
- and last but not least, verify ethical credentials, which could be difficult but after a few conversations you can easily realise this fact.

Good luck!

Yours,

Rafael Delgado

This will re-emphasize and update my October 2010 recommendation attorney Guillermo Castañeda. I have recently used him for additional legal work and professional advice and the expertise and service were just as I had previously experienced. I am still struggling with Spanish, and his excellent English and communication skills are very helpful. He takes the time to explain both the legal and sometimes cultural nuances of transactions here.

Guillermo is highly ethical, prompt and always easily reachable. This service is impeccable, and each time I have worked with him, he has provided help and services beyond just the legal work. Contact information is:

Amazing professional and warm service with Guillermo Castañeda-Echegaray, and his partner Javier Corrales-Melgar through a very complicated and delicate situation.

I have just concluded a very difficult sale of an apartment in Lima. Various previous 'professionals' unfortunately had made unethical and even illegal decisions with my file, without pre-authorization &/or transparency, in order to fulfill their own agendas. Luckily, they were not thieves, but their decisions created a practically impossible road block, one which few other lawyers would have had the expertise or willingness to deal with.

Guillermo guided me with an amazing blend of technical confidence and the highest of human ethics and sensibilities. And given the unique & rare complications, when the time came, he worked with special expert contacts to support the goal of successfully bringing my case to a fair conclusion.

What was most important to me was the feeling of support and positivity. It was like having a friend, standing by my side. And although I have many close connections in Lima, nothing could have substituted for the legal support which was so strong, professional, expert, loyal and so positively human...helping in the ultimate benefit of bringing me, the client, much peace and confidence amidst very frustrating & complex dynamics.

And finally, his willingness & desire to help me as a foreigner who had been previously ill-guided, was his pure motivation, first and foremost. And for this, I thank him endlessly. He has helped to restore my faith in investing in Magical Peru, and to transform the nightmare into a warm and positive experience.

He is not only a great lawyer, but an excellent ambassador to his field and in fact...whole country.

Thank you cannot begin to express...

Anyone wishing to contact me for any further info, pls do so at [email protected] (Christina)

Lima is a very difficult place to find knowledgeable, efficient and ethical legal service. I was fortunate to retain the services of Guirmmo Castenada. He is extremely articulate in both English and Spanish and demonstrates a genuine concern for what ever issue you may have. In my case I had a contractual dispute with my employer. I did not know my rights (as most expats don't living in Peru) and he spent an entire weekend investigating my case before my meeting with my employer. The outcome was fair and most importantly to me straightforward and just. I have no hesitations recommending Guirmmo for any issue you may have in Peru. If you need any more reference of his service feel free to contact me at [email protected].

You can contact Guirrmo at:

I am in need of an estate planning attorney who is bi-lingual and has a complete understanding of Peruvian law as it pertains to US citizens. The property is owned by a (deceased) family member who is a U.S. Citizen. We need an attorney to guide us through deeding over the property to remaining family members to then sell the property. Title is clean with no issues. Many docs including citizenship (previous Peruvian citizen now a U.S. citizen), marriage and birth certificates are in English and we need to know steps of what is needed, who should translate. Would like and willing to pay to be guided through the process from start to finish.

Again, MUST be bilingual (or speak quite a bit of English) and COMPLETELY understand estate law as it pertains to U.S. citizens in Peru.

Thank you all to anyone who can assist. It will be very much appreciated.

On this occasion I would like to thank indeed my old and new clients who always remain loyal.

I can highly recommend Daniel Stirnimann Rico of Migraciones Consulting, linked here: http://www.migracionesconsulting.com/# As the company name implies, this firm specializes in immigration law.

Mr. Stirnimann is bilingual Spanish / English and recently secured me my Carne de Extranjeria as a worker. Since then, he appointed me general manager and my company only has need of one Peruvian employee. He is probably not the cheapest, but expedited a difficult process (especially since I live in Trujillo, a.k.a., the Provinces) and is completely honest.

Greetings Website Visitors and Prospective Clients,

I submit this recommendation for attorney, Guillermo Castaneda-Echegaray, who upholds the highest standards in terms of morality, interest in his clients’ pursuits, and personality as an individual.

Mr. Guillermo recently assisted a close American friend of mine who was basically stranded in Lima, Peru and scammed by a supposed “loved one”. Plainly stated, Mr. Guillermo was a “life-saver”.
Mr. Guillermo is very persistent and timely reactive in his communications. Furthermore, he upholds the strict standards of client / attorney confidentiality. His efforts as a professional and his attention to detail are unsurpassed.

Personally, I have hired and dealt with countless people in the legal profession (in Peru and abroad) and have never felt the necessity to write such a recommendation.

In summary, I recommend that potential clients seeking justice, restitution, etc. approach Mr. Guillermo. These statements are very sincere and heartfelt.

Feel free to contact me if you have further questions:

I note that there have not been many very recent posts in this thread, and I am in need of updated information.

Based on the confusion re: the changes to the immigration/residency laws, I want to retain a Peruvian lawyer who actually understands (or is willing to learn more about) how this will affect my Carnet status and what actions I do or do not need to take.

Does anyone here have personal experience with such an individual and could you provide that attorney's contact information?

Thanks in advance for your response.

First, a word of advice: before contracting a law firm, make sure they are in the specialist area that you are looking for!!

Many lawyers here say ''si si si, I can do that'' but really they just want a signed contract so they can charge you (I am speaking from experience) although they have no idea how to do the proceses that you need.

Fortunately, I found an excellent, honest and trustworthy person in Judith Puente.

I can definitely recommend her firm. They specialize in FAMILY and also IMMIGRATION (two separate areas but under one roof!).

I am in a process for divorce and they are very competent. I am very happy with the way they have handled my delicate situation.

I have also done a number of ''tramites'' with immigration through this firm (Magaly and Jose handle this area) and have had good results with their services.

I am attorney in Los Angeles and retained Rafael Delgado Pacheco, a Lima attorney I found on the internet, to help me with a complicated inheritance issue. The case took two years to resolve and involved investigative work, appearances at various fora in Lima, and the opening of a California probate action in coordination with him. Throughout the entire time, I found Rafael to be honest, persistent and driven to achieve the best result possible, which he did. Trust is important and my trust in him was well-founded. I could not recommend him more highly.

I know how you feel. It seems that is how these bastards work. Although, they should at least give information and a quote/estimate for the entire process upfront.

Always agree on a price before you buy/pay. Golden rule for pretty much all services in Peru.

Thanks for your comment and also I have tried another ones which is mentioned on this forum but so far no chances of getting any good responses they all have a big mouth and just take advantage of people who doesn't know anything about where they want to move.

Its pity no principals followed.

I wholeheartedly recommend the services of RGB Avocats (http://www.rgbavocats.com/), who have assisted me with establishing my IT consulting business here in Peru, as well as various immigration-related matters, in a very stress-free manner, which is in stark contrast to the many other legal professionals that I've had dealings with in my years in Lima.

I also appreciate the free legal advice written in clear English that Ricardo Guevara Bringas of RGB Avocats has posted here on http://www.expatperu.com, and his frequent contributions to those that have posted questions on forums here.

Great Lima Lawyer: after my beautiful Peruvian wife asked me if I would be interested in buying her family’s Lima apartment, I reached out to Alan LaRue of ExPat Peru for the name of a good Lima lawyer who could help us with the transaction. I did this for a couple of reasons. While I knew that real estate transactions are closed by notaries in Peru,based on prior transactions, I realized that the transaction only went as smoothly as the quality of the notary and the quality of Peruvian notaries varies widely. As I was buying property from my wife’s family and wasn’t familiar with the process, in addition to simply overseeing the transaction, I wanted answers to understand how the process worked. Mr LaRue referred Ricardo Guevara Bringas. Mr Gringas promptly answered all my questions; quoted me a price that he honored and directed me to a notary who seamlessly closed our purchase. After reading and hearing of countless nightmares involving Peruvian real estate, it was refreshing to have MR Bringas as our counsel. In addition to being competent, honest and straightforward, Mr Bringas was fluent in English, French and Spanish. My point of reference is that I am an attorney licensed to practice in several states who specializes in real estate litigation and commercial real estate development. Professionally, it was fascinating to see the contrast between a residential apartment purchase in Lima and the 50 million dollar Santa Fe hotel purchase I was simultaneously overseeing on behalf of my client. I would without reservation recommend Mr Bringas.
