Can Openers

Postby dez » Tue Apr 05, 2016 8:38 pm

Now a days most cans are flip top but every once in a while you run into one that is not. Where can you find a can opener in this country? Just a simple mechanical nothing fancy or electrical, heck a P38 will due.

Good question, I have never seen one. You may get lucky and once a year Wong may import one or two. You can also try Surquillo, but I doubt they'd know what your talking about. Every Peruvian I know just jams a knife into the can - hence why you see a few missing fingers here and there :P (JK).

You just have to look for them in all the Wong, Metro, Vivanda, Tottus, Plaza Vea supermarkets for God's sake!

You can found ANYTHING to cook including all sorts of cooking gear in downtown Lima, just here in all this area:
https://www.google.com.pe/maps/@-12.049 ... 274268,18z

In Jirón Ucayali you can find a store dedicated exclusively to cooking gear... walking these boulevard: https://www.google.com.pe/maps/@-12.049 ... 312!8i6656

Lima is not only Miraflores and San Isidro.

Thanks. I am not an idiot. But maybe I am just stupid. Could you direct me to where I can find a can opener? Your maps are great but, honestly those stores you list were never any help. They had no idea what I was asking for.

A funny story.
After all my hi jinks and trying to describe what I wanted, a nice lady at Wongs demonstrated with a can of Spaghetti-os how to open with a kitchen knife. Very expertly.

Aren't you trying to leave Perú permanently? Is a can opener part of your plan?

From your thread "Over Stay." Maybe I just read it wrong, but when Polaron offered advice for leaving the country you posted back looking for his/her advice. Whatever. Good luck on the can opener, leaving the country, and anything else.

I came to Peru 7 years ago to marry. The paper work was just so confusing we never followed through. We were very happy but now things have fallen apart. I never had much money or a job in Peru, mostly lived off her.
I finally scraped enough together to get a flight. The 7 year fine is impossible to pay. Will Peru hold my hostage until it is paid? I really need help. I have no place to live.
Thanks

Apology accepted. But do you know what "de nada" means. It is a term which is offered after one thanks one. Did I thank you for something?

RS is my go to place.
Friendly competent customer service.

Picked up a ninja wallet there. Can opener problem solved along with 17 other uses too long to list here.
Also scored a 100 watt converter to use with my waffle maker.
Life is good.

Well I am glad you held your nose and helped out because I am now the proud owner of a gleaming can opener. Sodimac has them. I can now open my can of Chili.
Throw some dogs and buns on the barbie and we'll be in for some fine eatin'.
BTW, I did not go to Radio Shack, the more I thought about it, that was a troll being decietful and dishonest. Where do they come from?
It is a shame all are not as helpful as you are, even though you hesitated, but thanks and I am sure you helped others out too. Seems no one else knew where to find the contraption either. Maybe this should be in the FAQ"s

And it´s one of the reasons you see so many guys wandering around offering to sharpen your now-dull knife with their foot-powered knife-sharpening wheel.

Here's some other methods along with the knife.
The key is diligence and finding something edible and worth eating from a can of course.
For instance, chili con carne.
