Taxi and reliable transportation from the Airport

Postby josnav67 » Thu Sep 15, 2016 10:27 am

Hello all,

This is my first time posting on this forum. I am originally from Lima, Peru, but I have been living in the United States since 1982. Although, I am Peruvian/American, I am more familiar with my surroundings in the States than in Peru. I will arriving to Peru in the next three weeks, but this time will be a little different for me, as I will not be picked up at the airport by a family member or friend (paying everyone a surprise visit). I have heard horror stories about people being robbed after leaving the parking lot of the airport, and I would like to be on the safe side and remain cautious. Does anyone know of a reliable and trustworthy taxi service/transportation company that I can hire to take me to my final destination (San Miguel), which is really not far of a ride from the airport. Any suggestions or information regarding this subject will be greatly appreciated. :D

Best regards,

I've only used the official, in airport taxi service which I believe is called Taxi Green. The rates are clearly posted and I've never had anything but good service. But that's just my personal opinion based on my personal experiences, and I'm not a frequent flyer. I've taken taxis going to the airport that dropped me off just outside (10 meters or so) the entrance without hesitation or problems, but I don't know if I'd bother trying to save a few Soles by walking out of the airport to take a taxi not allowed to pick up passengers inside the airport grounds.

Hopefully others will post with some info about other options that can be pre-arranged.

The bus is an option.
You can go anywhere in the city from the airport for a few soles.
Here's a good thread that might make you think twice about taxis...

I use Taxi Green when I go from the airport to my hostal. I use the taxi service arranged by my hostal to go from the hostal to the airport. This arrangement has served me well.

As was mentioned in an earlier post, ensure with the driver that the price that was negotiated is in the Sol. Years ago, I picked up my son at the airport and arranged a taxi at a negotiated price. Half way to Miraflores, he stopped is a bad area and told me that the payment was to be in dollars. To not disturb my son, I went alone with the thief.

We've started using Uber. Let them know which door you're coming out of and they'll generally park and then call you back from just outside. You'll pay the parking fee but even then we've found them cheaper than the official airport taxis. There's generally one available within a few minutes - last week we called one and it was with us 5 minutes later.

We use Uber now, but have always been satisfied with Taxi Green. My Wife lost her driver from work recently and now uses Uber to get home. The driver even sends me a text with his name, photo and a map with his route and time of arrival!

Yep just use Taxi Green the official taxis at the airport is the best option. Other choices as said are Uber or Easytaxi who are good. Both companies will send you the taxi drivers name, car details and price before the driver arrives which is good as if he tries to con a few more soles out of you you can show him the receipt for the expected fair.
You can also rate the driver out of five stars, so it really isn't in his best interests to give you a bad experience as it will effect his future taxi bookings. Uber also does a shared taxi option if you want to reduce the fair.

If your flight is getting into Lima late i would just use Taxi Green. The drivers are inside the airport and will escort you to the car nearby. I'd be a bit wary of stepping outside the airport and getting a taxi from the street. Yes it works out cheaper but it's a bad part of the city and night is it really worth the risk for a few soles!

The drivers of taxi green are the ones that approach you after your reclaimed your bags. They are the most expensive ones. Once you get into the arrivals hall, other drivers will approach you with a lower rate. Once you go outside the terminal, you will be approached by other drivers who will offer and even lower rate. The further you walk towards the exit, the lower the fares that will be quoted.

I used all off them in the past and never had any problems. Remember always negotiate the rate. You can always get a lower price than they offer.
Also make sure that you agree the price in SOLES. Often they demand 50. You negotiate and they agree 35 but upon arrival at the destination they will demand $35 instead of 35 soles. Always make sure, it's soles and not DOLLARES.

When I was on a budget, I often used the public transport buses outside the airport. It gets you to San Miguel for 2 soles. But it's not advisable during the rush hour if you have a lot of bags. I used them when I was traveling with handluggage only or when I had to meet someone at the airport and hand no luggage.

It's often hard to find a taxi to go TO the airport. Taxi drivers need a special permission to be able to pick up or drop off passengers at the airport. Few have this. The large herd of illegal taxis in Lima don't have this permission at all.

But you can get around this by asking the driver to drop you off outside the airport. Still, it's not a problem. It's only a 2 minutes walk to the terminal.
Some drivers will still drop you off inside the perimeter of the airport but will remove the famous ''taxi sticker'' from their windscreen or the taxi sign on the roof. One driver, told my gf that if the police ask questions at the checkpoint at the airport then she has to tell the police that the driver is her brother and he's giving her and her bf a lift to the airport.

If there is only one or two of you, an inexpensive alternative is the new airport express buses. More than 2, it makes more sense to take a taxi.

A friend of mine took the Airport Express Bus and he told me it was a horrific experience. First, the bus, departed late as the driver wanted to wait for more passengers. The Wifi that they love to brag about does not work. He said the other passengers went from rude to downright crude. One lady just threw a used diaper out the window of the bus. My friend also told me that many of the passengers needed baths and deodorant was in short supply.

A hotel near my house used to let the Airport Express Bus pick up passengers there and finally when the private club up the street and several of the buildings close by complained about the passenger behavior the hotel told the Airport Express Bus to find another hotel. I do not know anything about the other bus company that has a link.

We are talking about s/.30 for the bus versus s/. 60 and you can have a private Mercedes from my house for s/.60 that arrives when you want it to, and the driver takes your bags to the ticket counter thus avoiding the Airport Porter's tip. Also, the driver takes you to the entrance closest to your airline whereas the Airport Express Bus just drops you off somewhere in the Parking Lot. I am willing to pay for service, so the Airport Express Bus just doesn't cut it for me.
