security systems in apartments

Postby sonia » Sat Nov 28, 2009 7:48 pm

Here's a question for all of you living in rented apartments:

I have to ask because I didn't realize how new I really am to Lima until our apartment hunting got started.

How elaborate a security system for your apartment do you think is necessary? Here are some of the options we have seen:

alarm system
metal plates on door
acordion-like gates on windows
bolt on door
metal bar across door

For an apartment on a lower-level floor, what would you consider necessary?

We have the requisite bars on the windows and double locking doors, and three barking dogs. :D

Everything, but the alarm (nobody cares) and you will end up getting fined!
And a "Good Dog"! In 6 years nobody has ever messed with !

I was never concerned until the house next to us got robbed. They walked through three different apartments while everyone was sleeping. Took all their electonics and computers. They were the only house on the street that did not have the electric fence (they had flowers and plants)...the police assume this is how they got in.

Now we have motion detectors and door sensors.

It was mentioned that robbers use a sleeping spray that knocks you out while they go through the house...anyone else heard of this?

Depends where you live. LIve higher up. Don't like the bars on the windows, reminds me of a prison and you couldn't jump if there was a fire. WE have a guard, that's about it. Oh, . . and nothing worth stealing.

I am always at home...and I am always hungry. So, whoever breaks in...I will enjoy my meal.

Thank you all for your replies. Security is a big concern as I would like to sleep without worry when I am alone in the apartment. For that reason, I have discarded the idea of a ground floor apartment. Maybe even a second story aprtment is not safe. Third floor seems best. Any thoughts?

And also, does anyone know where in Lima I could purchase motion detectors and door sensors?

In HOMECENTER or SODIMAC, they sell security systems like alarms.´
They have also professional and reliable tradesmen who can install them for you.
