Living in Cusco

Postby Kiki » Thu Mar 29, 2018 8:29 am

Hi there, we are considering moving to the Cusco area of Peru in the near future from Canada. Is there advice for or against this idea? If not Cusco specifically, then what city/area would you recommend near Cusco? Should we consider another area of the country altogether? We are a healthy mid 60 in age and retired.

Cusco is a beautiful city, but checkout the surrounding terrain and also the altitude. Combined they can be quite a problem.

Yes I have heard the elevation can be a problem for many. We want to be near Cusco but not necessarily in Cusco. Perhaps Pisac or somewhere in the Sacred Valley. Looking for pros and cons and well really open to any suggestions.

The altitude is going to be a problem, but only during the first days (or weeks).

Once you are acclimatized , your body will work as it would be at sea level.

An acclimatized body has naturally increased the number of red blood cell

You could rent (air bnb) a place in Urubamba for a month or two. It is centrally located in the Sacred VAlley, has all the services, and would be a good place to explore other long term options. It is tough to make a recommendation without knowing more about your likes and dislikes. The sacred valley offeres a wide range of life-style possiblilities.
