Chiclayo in Years Past

Postby Chiclayo gringo » Tue Mar 31, 2009 12:26 pm

These photos are mostly of Chiclayo’s Plaza de Armas and the adjacent Santa Maria Cathedral during different stages of construction. I have no idea what the time period is and the photo shop I bought them from could not supply any information.

I’m confused about the chorological order of the photos. The first photo seems to be the oldest, given the clothing and lack of cars and electric trolley tracks, yet the church appears to be further along in construction than in the second and third photos, and the park looks to be more manicured, which suggests a considerable amount of time between the photos. Anyone have any thoughts on the apparent contradictions?

Photo#1 was taken from the top of what is now Interbank. It is looking east along Av. Elias Aguirre, which at the time of the photo was Av. Real.

Image
Photo#2 is again taken from the top of Interbank. Though the camera angle is identical to photo #1, the content is drastically different.

Image
Photo#3 is another view of the church and park. Chiclayo’s city offices are now located in the building visible between the trees.

Image
Photo#4 was taken at ground level with a portion of the church and park on the left, again looking east along Av. Elias Aguirre at the intersection with Av. Balta Norte.

Image
Photo#5 is the same view today. It is the only camera angle I have been able to duplicate so far.

Image
Photo#6 is looking west along Av. Elias Aguirre and was taken from the top of one of the buildings in photo#4. The building on the left is now Interbank. The convent in the center was completely demolished. In its place is the modern Patrimonio cultural de Chiclayo.

Image
Photo#7 is an older aerial view of Pimental.

Great pics - really interesting. I hope you can finagle your way into getting some more current day re-creations of them. I love seeing the 'then' and 'now' shots.

Hi Tom

Great photos. I am going to Chiclayo for the first time in August to visit my partners family. We then go up to Mancora for a week. Are you based in Chiclayo/

It would be nice to get some advice on this city

Thanks
