IMO, this is the thread of the year, and I’d give victmanu (with several close runners up) MVP for his copious contributions to this thread spanning many genres. Haven't had a chance to listen to everything that I think I might like, but of what I have listened to I like the more psychedelic, 60’s sounding bands, some of the 70’s prog rock, and I love me some funk and have been listening to Black Sugar lately. Always have liked music made by people who really know how to play their instruments, such as King Crimson, Zappa, etc., and anything more on the offbeat, different side. Also looking for some latin version of ‘Sterolab’ if it exists.

Still need to listen to a few of the other suggestions, but any other suggestions for bands similar to:

Black Sugar
Traffic Sound
Los Belkings
Los Holys
Bossa 70
Nil’s Jazz Ensemble
Los Yorks
El Alamo
Los Silvertons
Laghonia
Charly Garcia/Sui Generis
Os Mutantes
Café Tacvba
The Mars Volta

I also like music on the goofy side. When I lived in Nicaragua we had an old Soviet made troop transport truck that was acquired from Cuba called ‘Chacarron’ that was used to pick up guests for the 45 minute, dirt road ride coming to stay at the isolated lodge where I lived. The song was crazy popular at the lodge at the time (along with Daddy Yankee's 'GasoLina') and has been in my head the last ten years.

Is the traditional musica criolla a dying genre? Do you listen to it or appreciate it? My favorite is Callejon de Un Solo Cano (sorry no n with squiggly on my keyboard) and Jose Antonio. Those songs give me goosebumps.

I don't know that much about the musica criolla, but I do like it myself. I mostly know the songs by Eva Ayllon, like Mal Paso and Mi Prodiedad Privada

Not Peruvian but Colombian now based out of Miami. See them live if you have the opportunity.

It's not very Latin, but this is what I am listening to at the mo'. Gimme Shelter, Rolling Stones, Mick Taylor jamming along with the band in 1972. I could sit and listen to him play all day, a beautiful player. But he just couldn't write a song like Keith Richards.

They get into it at about 2mins.
