The ranking of this waterfall in the world's highest varies from 3rd to 14th, depending on which source you read, and whether the fall is considered one drop or two. Nevertheless, it is a truly awesome sight, in a spectacular area and it is amazing that it hasn't come to wider attention before this year. It is fairly remote, but reachable in 2 days. Here is a possible itinerary:
- fly to Chiclayo
- take evening bus from Chiclayo to Pedro Ruiz Gallo (7/8 Hours) arriving in very early morning
- take a taxi to the small village of San Carlos (45 mins)
- from here start walking: the path is fairly clearly marked but there are quite a few off-shoots to confuse one so might be worth hiring a local to show you the way (the taxi driver did this for us)
- after 2 and a half hours strenuous walking, we arrived at the foot of the first drop, where there were some rickety, slippery ladders
There are other possibilities, such as approaching from Chachapoyas or Tambopata, and you can walk to the bottom of the second, longer drop. If you're interested mail SAE or visit the Clubhouse (where we can show you on a map).
