Whether you are planning to move to Peru, or you are already living here, the Expat Peru forum is a great place to meet people and to find information. Welcome to our community!
I guess you were not here for the last one? Not even seen pics of it? Serious flooding and damage up here. Nice thought to help, reality was to get around with all those washed out bridges etc. was more than an adventure. Have an escape plans if you are living low and back up plans to access your f...
I am sure my input is of little value here, but been here happily for more than a few years now, and not even slightly worried about any new immigration laws, unless they stop accepting dollars at the borders.
I see the whole thing as more of an excuse for corrupt govt officials to ask for huge handouts and do nothing or very little, and pocket the rest. Make your own preparations and take care, don't count on anyone! I hope we make it out alive past the end of of this year. The way they are playing it up...
yes alan thanks for clarifying, and that is what i was saying. better to NOT be in the proper town, but up the hill away from the negative energy. teamoperu, you have a good point i never went 20 years ago, just reporting on recent conditions. i can imagine how back then it was different. probably a...
the surf was good! small but fun. yeah so was the show. anyone anyone? buller buller? trujillo was a ghost town, with just about all the residents and police out in force for the show, probably would have been a good day to go robbing houses. no im not a choro. take it easy now. not...
http://www.rpp.com.pe/2015-09-11-huanchaco-sede-del-primer-festival-aereo-trujillo-2015-noticia_834746.html After the bullaza this morning, I saw the posters in the municipalidad and it made sense. Seems they are/were running some practice flights, announcing their arrival/disturbing my peaceful tru...
my humble opinion....there is something evil afoot in the town of aguas calientes. stay at this fat cat hotel if you can afford it, or if it is not booked up. higly reccomended. alan, lucky you getting in to use the hot tub  no offense if you work in aguas calientes or are from there, but t...
very humanitarian of you. i wish i were closer to you, i would love to assist. is there anything i can do from afar? thanks for your efforts random person.
i dont want to get into some silly discussion about the context of peruvian slang, however you bring up a valid point and yes in other parts maybe it is used in that context. the people who taught me the meaning provided several contexts. not that this has anything to do with helping the OP. i proba...
I live up here in la libertad. Wanting to get to know the north, I struck out, with a good 4x4 with the ultimate goal of reaching the selva and tarapoto, making a huge circle using only dirt roads wjerever possible. This was a few years back so my beta may be a bit outdated. We took the road from pa...
Some additions to my first post.... A little background and off topic sorry. Pharmacies are big busniess here. It has been my experience that they are just as much peperos or peperas - slang for pill poppers - but sometimes also pepas are slang for strong benzos such as xanax and 10 mg diazepam, so ...
I spoke to a neighbor involved in the industry and he agrees with you. His point was that, even if fishmeal stops going into the mouths of farmed fish, it will still go to feed poultry and swine (just like in the good old days), and even though the price will drop, the current profit margin will ea...
Ken yeah....I dont want to be all negative about chimbote as we are just further sidetracking alans thread. Ill make another post to get back on track, but it is true what you say about the cevicherias very economic, and the ONLY place i have bought in resteraunts ceviche de pejerrey, supposedly the...
I saw this article the other day, which deals with a recent scientific discovery that allows canola seeds to be genetically modified in order to replicate the same kind of fish oils that make anchoveta-based fish meal such an attractive ingredient in feed for farmed fish. If the crop is eventually ...
Decimate the market for peruvian fishmeal. Lets say it again for effect, deciamte the peruvian fishmeal market. Oh no! Wont happen. The waters may be overfished, polluted, what have you, but this will not happen. They can do all they want but I find it very hard to believe the people who are really i...
For what it is worth I have spotted quite a few us military goons in my neck of the woods lately. Pretty easy. Reading this thread in entirety would give me a splitting headache. Dont you people have anything better to do with your time? I personally think the troops and whoever really controls them...
First to the gringo who calls himself huanchaquero, were you born there? If not better be careful calling yourself that. 9 years is a long time but we are always considered outsiders extranjeros no matter what you may think. Second, Huanchaco is NOT Trujillo. Punto! I have nothing more to say on thi...
Check out Charles Schwab Bank. They refund all ATM fees no matter where in the world you withdraw cash. I've never seen a fee on my account that needed to be refunded. Best suggestion, get a bank that will not charge, or reverse the charges, or these fees will kill you. I once had this bank that no...
HI Gutarman 1987. First thing, your screen name....well in case you don't know, it seems that 80´s rock/pop is "en moda" or in fashion here in Peru for now, at least from what I can tell with a lot of people. Of course this doesnt apply everywhere thanks goodness, but that alone may help y...
I was sort of joking about 3.50 but after seeing 3.30 for reelz im jaw dropping at four.:-):-):-):-):-):-) I heard it was all because of chickens and china. Wzit i already survive on chaufa when not fishing. Thanks china. You can make transfers. Depends on what you consider a "problem" to ...
Beaches bring tourism which equals money. Money will always be misspent to protect this resource. Huanchaco was recently designated a world surfing reserve. I have surfed in LA in the us during and afte a heavy rain close to storm drains and the water quality is still better than the average day at ...
ask for directions often, confirm and reconfirm. 99% of the way is de freeeeente nada mas but easy to get sidetracked. travel during the day as much as possible. fill up every chance you get. definitely fill up in chiclayo. they are improving roads here in the north and some are now even two lane. w...
this is one of my many talents. it might be nice to hear a little bit about what you are looking for. scope of work. timeline. etc. i tend to shy away from people who have no idea what they want.
Plenty of popular hiking places in the sierra of lima dept. stick to the popular well known spots. on another note small remote villages in the sierra, they are isolated and do NOT take kindly to strange people wandering THEIR land. some parts of the sierra are very dangerous, while others welcome y...
this beach will always have problems with big swells. this is nothing new. this year there have been some good strong waves so no surprises here. you also know - or probably not - but the 100 year old pier in chicama was destroyed by a big swell around this time. i cant remember if it was this one o...
as far as im concerned if you are very sensitive peru is not the place for you. make a big bubble, get inside, and never crawl out. oh and 20 mgs of valium and a few chelas would help too. as it has been my experience many many people enjoy maleteando or palteando - embarassing someone or talking be...
I feel safer here in Peru than I ever did in the states. Then again I am not in Lima, and from what I can tell the majority of posters seem to be commenting on lima. general security protocols apply anywhere in the world and here in the north, they say for example trujillo is super dangerous but i w...
CAFE DE ALGARROBA TOSTADA Y MOLIDA. while this is not true coffee, it a an excellent replacement and has the same protien content as oatmeal. it is toasted a ground up friut of the algarrobina tree that grows so prominently here in the north. i consider this to be one of my go to enegry sources befo...
they have been cracking down on pharmacies lately so things you used to be able to get without a scrip, even though required, no eran muy controlada, they were not very controlled. now it seems you have to get the scip, but my experience is there are huecos that will sell whatever, just depends on t...
go to the sierra. choose your locale. north, central, south. in this manner all your money goes directly to the people who make them, no middlemen. well worth the trip.
depends on how you enter....through the backdoor (meaning not jorge chavez intl airport)....well seems there is less n less control in some spots these days.
stayed in a place once in cieneguilla that had all you all you are looking for but damn if i remember the name. some cabins even had their own private pools.
how complex can the fishing industry be? is there any wiggle room for profits? are you now in the fish biz? 1st off ..... sorry if i was being a bit sarcastic and didnt mean to sound so harsh but i just thought there might be some expats out there who had some info back when i posted. how complex i...
answering my own question. a couple years ago -2013- i came on here and asked if anyone had any info in the fishing industry in peru. i got either no answer or very very uselss answers. i am here to say - andate a la mierda! all of you. in the nicest way possible of course. i am in peru. living in a...
Thanks much for posting up the link to download this free. I think it was a good read and provided me with some valuable words that either I didnt know at all, or had heard in conversation but wasnt able to infer meaning from context. While I wont claim to be a literary genius or grammar perfectioni...
I have accepted a position in Peru, but I have some misdemeanor offenses on my criminal record (driving under the influence of alcohol, disorderly conduct and misdemeanor assault - all of which occurred over 4 & 5 years ago). Is this going to affect my ability to obtain a work visa? Diso...
Great thread. Viva la musica! Big fan of live music, no shortage of cumbia concerts for me to check out here. Thanks for all the links. Maybe I will come back and post a few here later, too laxy now though. I was surprised to see el opio mentioned i didnt think anyone here would listen to them for s...
Spanish in peru is very well spoken. I learend that the hard way after spending some time here then going to chile for a while, man they talk bad there! It was easy for me to learn mostly but i got bad grades in school due to being a thick headed student. Thankfully spanish class continued for many ...
Surprised you got a verbal answer. Must be a lima thing. Most obscure places i went to that i didnt have good directions for, when asking directions in spanish would be answered with a hand waving in the direction they thought was right. I learned early on to ask often and ask people who look like t...
