Re: Wedding/Engagement rings ?

I was recently looking to buy gold jewelry and the prices in Miraflores were extremely high. A freind took me to the Centro Comercial . There was one area that must have had over 20 jewelry stores all in the same location. They sold gold jewelry by the gram. ($45 per gram). the prices were about 25%...

Re: purchasing phone cards to make outside calls on landline

They still make the cards.I live in La Molina and am able to buy them in many of the little bodegas, I get one hour of calls to the United States for 10 soles. You might want to try one of the little bodegas in your neighborhood.

Re: Travel Insurance and Registering with US Embassy

When you buy an airplane ticket they normally ask you if you want trip insurance. The cost of the trip insurance is normally about 5% of the price of the ticket. For $1000 ticket the insurance will cost $50. The insurance is good for the duration of the trip, whether it is one week or 6 months. It i...

Re: Cost of Marriage in Peru

I was recently checking on the prices to host an event. The top hotels will charge about $120 a plate for a dinner and some drinks. The Maria Angola (4 star hotel) in Miraflores had dinners for as little as $34 per plate . Other than that you are talking about music , a DJ or a band , and you can sp...

Re: Leaving Peru have Carnet Extranjeria - what to do?

If you want to leave the country and have a carnet de extranjería you may have to get a certiifacte to present at Passport control when you leave the country. The last time I left , in October of this year I presented a Formulario 1692 Certificado de REntas y Rentenciones, I asked the lady at passpo...

Dear Argidd:
I apologize to you. My observations were a little uppity. I was not sensitive to the Peruvian perception of my comments. Thank you for pointing this out. I will avoid making any such type of comments in the future and I certainly didn't intend to offend anyone. I am sorry.

PERUVIAN ODDITIES

We are always observing things about the peruvian culture that seem to be at odds with our Anglo way of thinking .Some recent observations are as follows: What is a can opener? The vast majority of Peruvians use a knife to puncture a hole in a can. Very few use a can opener. I have showed a can open...

Re: Nazca--are the air tours safe?

10 years ago there were about 20 planes at the Nasca airport giving tours. They were mostly single engine Cessnas (172's?) That were an average of 40 years old. Thereafter, they had two fatal crashes in the next five years. After this they shut the Nasca airport down and they implemented newer safet...

Re: Moving to Lima

In order to find a place to live , you might want to take a 3 step approach. First you will need to check into a hotel in Miraflores and plan on staying there about one week. You can find decent hotels for as little as $60 per night or stay at the Marriott or Hilton for $200-$300 per night. During t...

INVENTIONS THAT PERU NEEDS

There are several inventions that would be helpful to improve the quality-of-life in Peru. Some of them are as follows: 1. It seems like every day I hear car alarms go off. In my neighborhood one alarm went off all day long. I would like to see somebody invent a CAR - ALARM-SHUTTER-OFFER. 2. Peru is...

Re: Medical Insurance in Peru?

You might want to consider buying trip insurance which primarily covers accidents. It also comes with evacuation coverage , which means it will pay the cost to send you back to the states ,if necessary. The cost of the coverage is about 5% of the cost of the ticket. Health insurance is available her...

Re: How long to become fluent in Spanish to employable level

You could probably become fluent in a Spanish at an employable level without being truly fluent in Spanish. For example , to be truly fluent I believe that the State Department has a one year training program for its employees that is 8 hours a day plus study time for 1 year. This is more than 2000 ...

Re: Should I marry a Peruvian woman for cash

Marriage fraud is punishable by up to 5 years in jail and a $250,000 fine. Furthemore, my understanding is that only about 50% of fiance and marital visas are granted, therefore you can't be assured of taking her to the US. In addition if you got caught you may be disqualified from getting a visa fo...

If you bring in a vehicle from the U. S. you may have to take it back with you. I believe that you can't sell an imported car that is more than 2 years old; If you were in peru for more than 2 years I don't think you could sell the car here. I have seen other posts on here about that problem.

Re: Traveling with money/ ATM withdrawal

If you are coming from outside of Peru then you may want to contact your bank( atm issuer) to advise it that you want your card to work in Peru. My ATM cards from the US do not work in Peru unless I contact my bank and advise it of the time period that I need it to work in Peru.

Re: Importing a Car to Peru

I think there is a law prohibiting the import of a vehicle more than three years old . You may have problems bringing the Hummer in. There are several export agencies on the internet that export cars to South America. Alot of these are in Miami. I would be very reluctant to import the Hummer. It mig...

Believe in Santa Claus ?

I recently visited a family in Peru for the holidays and they had a 13 year old daughter that still believed in Santa Claus. I thought that most kids by about 10 years of age knew the truth. Isn,t this kind of odd. Do you know if this is an isolated incident or is this common?
