Re: Cost of living in Peru

I think Roosevelt is the most expensive and that runs about $20,000 per year I think don`t hold me to that figure. That figure is close but a bit on the high side. Roosevelt is a bit less than $14K a year. However that does not include the one time $17K entrance fee (as of this year). Assuming you ...

Re: mobile hotspot

Both Claro and Movistar have 4G LTE. Claro cheaped out a bit and is splitting their existing 3G spectrum into part 3G and part LTE. Movistar won the auction to purchase entirely new spectrum for their LTE service, so is keeping their 3G spectrum as is and using the new spectrum only for LTE. Theoret...

Re: Customs regulations: tourist vs. resident

Looks like some of the limits for personal effects have been raised. Where the limit used to be one camera it's now two. Not sure if it's always been two mobile phones or if that's changed as well. http://www.sunat.gob.pe/orientacionaduanera/viajeros/formatos/DDJJ-Ingles.pdf I find it amusing that ...

Authority of district security?

I've been wondering something for a while: What is the actual authority of the district security guards with the blue lights? Do they carry guns? Can they arrest suspicious people / burglars / drunk drivers? Or are they limited to just calling the police? I saw a couple of them in a truck rapidly ch...

Re: SANTACON in Lima!!!

Sounds fun, although it would be completely contradictory to my usual M.O. of not calling attention to myself when walking around Lima..! Might be okay if done in a real safe area. But I still wouldn't let myself get anywhere near as drunk as I would in the US. A foreigner walking around drunk in a ...

Re: Things I STILL haven't gotten used to:

Here's a mystery: Why can you get over ten pages printed, which uses expensive ink and paper, for about 1 sol, but to scan just *one* page to a PDF, which uses *zero* ink or paper, it also costs 1 sol. I just don't get it. Oh, and here's another one: Why do some radio stations insist on talking over...

As I just posted in another thread, YES, you can ignore someone.

Just add them to you "enemy" list in the User Control Panel.

Re: Maybe it's time for Chi Chi to say 'adios'.

A tip for anyone who isn't already aware: You can add a user to your "enemy" list in the User Control Panel and their posts will then automatically be hidden from your view. You can still see that they posted something and you can click to see what they posted if you are suddenly intereste...

Re: Finally Getting Married

Be careful about updating her Peruvian ID to "married" status if she is planning to stay in Peru for any length of time. We've run into problems with this. When we were trying to buy a car, the notary would not let my wife buy the car without my signature since her ID says she is married. ...

Re: Document for Leaving w/Child

If the child is using a Peruvian passport then you need a notarized (by Peruvian Notary, not a US notary) letter. This is Peruvian law.

But if the child is using a US passport you need nothing, assuming child has same last name as you. The relevant Peruvian law does not apply to US citizens.

Re: Expat bringing a television/Misc electronics..

By the way, Pandora and Netflix (with all movies) can work fine if you set up a proxy or VPN connection to a server in the US. Just find a friend or family member in the US who will let you share their network connection, and then have them set up a wifi router with custom firmware (DD-WRT, OpenWRT,...

Re: Expat bringing a television/Misc electronics..

I try to buy electronics here if possible. It is just easier and the price difference isn't all that much for most stuff. The selection is getting noticeably better each year. We bought a nice 55" LG TV this year during a sale before xmas and the price was only slightly higher than it would hav...

Re: Where Are Expats Going To Celebrate The New Year?

For the past six years I have generally spent New Year's Eve at a party along the beach in Asia, Puerto Viejo, etc. Great fun, and for a foreigner, certainly affordable. This year I went to BYOB party that was downright cheap at only S/.30 per person (venue, music, soda, service included, only drawb...

Re: Introduce Yourself!

Hi, I am.... well, I think I'll keep my real name to myself for now since I'm in the habit of keeping an anonymous low profile in Peru for safety. Maybe later 8) For now I'm calling myself gringolandia since that's how my niece-in-law humorously referred to the US recently. I'm from the Chicago area...

Re: Fastest Broandband connection for an upload in Lima

My best upload speed experience was with Claro USB. They appear to have good internet peering arrangements such that whatever upload speed you can achieve locally is more or less similar to what you'll get while uploading to the US. That was last year so it could be different now. This year I'm not ...

Re: How do these thieves at Telefonica still get away with this?

I may be able to shed a small bit of light on this topic. I am currently using Telefonica's free wifi from my beach house in the Puerto Viejo area. It is fantastic when it works, but not terrible reliable. But for the price, I can't complain. Here's the speed when I do a regular speed test: http://w...
