Teaching English here and working for call centres do not pay much. I can tell you that much.

I would recommend applying around 4 weeks in advance or so as it can take a few weeks for your application to get processed plus you have to get your passport back from NY and that takes a few business days.

@Renodante, it means 6 months before your passport expires.

A friend of mine came in with 4 months left on her passport and she did not seem to have an issue. She came in by land via Ecuador, though.

It really depends on the immigration officer's mood that day. The least they can give you is 30 days unless you're in transit.
