Actually, the place I'm interested in is in the Chanchamayo valley - much MUCH closer than either Iquitos or Puerto Maldonado. We're on a tight budget and traveling with children - we'd like to avoid plane trips. :) I learned of Pampa Hermosa through the expat email list - I was just hoping perhaps ...

Jungle trips

My sister and nephew are coming down for Christmas, and we were hoping to travel around a little bit. They would especially like to take a short trip to the jungle, perhaps only 4-5 days. I've seen in the past some links to places that are relatively easy (and inexpensive) trips from Lima. One in pa...

I'd like to donate blood, but I think I remember hearing that people with tattoos are not permitted to give blood, and I've got a couple. Can anyone verify this?

I've heard in the past that you can't give blood here if you have tattoos - is that true? I'd be happy to give blood of they'll take it.

Re: Living in Peru

I am 62 years old Canadian and I wish to live in Peru. I have 3 questions for those expats living in Peru. (1)Under the rentista visa other than proving that I have the required $1000 income per month is it neccessary to deposit that amount in a Peruvian Bank each month? I realize that I will have ...

We're in Surquillo, between La Calera and the Aurora neighborhood of Miraflores - there was a lot of shaking here, but no real damage to speak of. We'll walk around the neighborhood tomorrow, see if there's anything visible after the sun's come up. There've been at least a dozen aftershocks so far, ...

I found this site to be quite helpful - http://www.pigeons.biz/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=19 . It's a forum for pigeon fanciers, and they have reams of advice on caring for orphaned pigeons/doves (and other birds, too). A lot of quite knowledgeable people were online and answering all my questions in...

It can be taken badly, so I would not approach a girl saying "hola cholita". On the other hand, it is a normal word that indicates a half-blood, but I believe in some countries it means "*****", "coward", or even "sweet" and "nice". A very tricky wo...

any ideas on how to get it to eat? It doesn't seem interested in any food, though that might be because it's frightened. I've got some (what I guess you would call) chicken mash, sort of a Grape-nuts looking stuff that you mix with warm water for baby chickens - but I can't get him to eat any of it ...

Help with a Pigeon

So I found a baby pigeon on the side walk in front of my house today. Understanding that there is an abundance of pigeons in Lima, I still couldn't bring myself to just leave it sitting out there, what with the dogs and cats running around. So, it's in my house now, and I've no idea what to do with ...

It is very possible to find less expensive housing - it just takes looking. Use the traditional methods of course, but we we've had the best luck with just walking around neighborhoods we like. Talk to people in bodegas, and any security you might see on the street. That's how we found our home, a n...

Johnny and I have been married about a week now. We'd really like to go to the US for Xmas 2007, with our kids, which are my stepkids. Anyone know what it may be like to get travel visas for them? It seems to me that it would be obvious that if we wanted to stay in the US, we'd go for the spousal vi...

I'm from Florida - this earthquake stuff is new to me! Give me a good old-fashioned hurricane! Er,,... ok, maybe not. Truly though, I'm so unused to earthquakes, even after more than 2 years here, that I don't react enough to even be nervous. This last one I had sense enough to yell for the k...

We bought a beautiful Ceder bed with doble orthopedic pillowtop mattress for about S/.750 at the Plaza Hogar (or is it Plaza del Hogar?) on Angamos Este in Surquillo. Heading east on Angamos, pass the Ace home center at the corner of Rep. de Panama... look for it on the left. It's the huge furniture...

I've got an account at Interbank the same way - passport, and money to deposit.

The only problem we had was that I only had 1 last name, and they need to have 2 last names to make their computer happy. I used my mom's maiden name and all was well.

Re: LA PUNTA

I still think that you need to learn a lot more about Lima. As an american you should know that there are places you do not go, and you do not take a combi...... Clearly your knowledge of Lima is not that good. Once again, you have to visit La Punta to really see that it is very different from any ...

This has been discussed a lot in the expat email list, and honestly, I don't think I've ever seen a really good answer other than transferring the money from bank to bank or using western union. I've been here for a year now and live completely off my ATM card, but I can only withdraw $200 per 24 hr...
