30-35 soles a day seems to be the going rate. Paying by the hour is very generous, I think if you are paying 10 soles an hour that is more than fair. Some will also ask for their transportation costs to be covered if it is a far trek.

Arica is the way to go, simple and no hassles or bribes. Next time fly down to Tacna, grab a cab and cross over and back within an hour with no trouble. It is $1 a day, I read that on a sign there at the Arica crossing.
