US Permanent Resident, Peru Citizen - Passport Question

Hello!

My wife is a Peruvian citizen by birth, she is here in the US with me - living with a green card, permanent resident, as we're applying for her citizenship. We are wanting to go on a cruise, but need a passport for her - Peruvian obviously, as she's not a US Citizen yet.

She has an old Peruvian passport from when she left there [22 years ago - has never left the US since], but we're not sure do we need to get that same one renewed or get a new one altogether and where / how do we go about getting one being here in the US?? Also, does anyone know how long that would take roughly?

Any help would be appreciated greatly as we have booked the cruise for a few months from now and need to get this all straightened out ASAP. I know, booking it first before checking - not such a good idea  right? LOL, but we're excited to take her on her first trip out of the US in all that time.

Where in the US are you? You will need to go to your nearest Peruvian consulate #1... she will need her DNI renewed if it's expired (which I'm sure it probably is at this point) & #2... she will probably need a new passport.

Show your wife this website, it gives you all the instructions and consulate locations: http://www.consuladoperu.com/index.php?consulado=

I would give them a call just in case before going, so you know exactly what you need to bring with you. Buena suerte!

Usually a consulate might take between two weeks to a month (maybe more)
to get a new passport or to renew an old one.

Thanks for the replies guys.

I checked out the website and tried calling our nearest office [Miami] - but all they have is a generic voice message with instructions. You can't actually speak to anyone without going. So Friday we will head over to their office and try to find out.

The whole DNI thing is crazy.

I have heard from others they have to wait MONTHS just to get one before even getting a passport. She has been out of Peru for 22 years - and doesn't even recall having a DNI # or what it is / was [she left when she was 4]. So I'm sure I have yet another exciting adventure waiting.

Anyhow, thanks so much for your help and I'll be sure to let you know how everything turns out.

Maybe it can help someone else in the future.

Hello,

I am in a very similar situation and would like to know how things turned out for your wife, and how long of a process it took.

Thank you!
