Switching from a Delta flight to a local airline, with a dog

Postby Stotler1960 » Fri Jul 13, 2012 10:37 am

Plan to fly in to Lima, with Delta, with my dog in cargo. Flight arrives at midnight local time. My next destination is Arequipa. Can anyone suggest a local airline to fly me and my dog to Arequipa? How far are the international and domestic terminals in Lima? Can anyone suggest a local travel agent, in Lima, who might help me book and pay for my tickets from Lima to Arequipa? Thank you for your help.

The Lima airport is tiny compared to American airports (Arequipa more so).. It only has like 20 or 30 gates and 1 terminal. I can't recommend a travel agent but there are only 2 or 3 airlines here:

http://lan.com
http://www.peruvianairlines.com/
http://taca.com

Lan is an American Airlines partner so you may even be able to book it through them.

Good luck.

International flights and domestic flights are in the same terminal.

Immigration goes quick and customs too.

I advice to take enough connection time between your flights in case your international flight is late.

Lima airport is know as one of the best airports in the world. It's very modern and beautifull.

Dogs are put in the forward hold, lights are kept on and it's behind the avionics compartment so that areas stays warm.

Keep in mind too that it will take a while to get your dog out of the cargo area. Our dogs arrived at 10:30 pm, but it took until after 4 am to get the dogs out.

They were put in a holding area in the terminal. You dogs arrived at 10.30 pm and only got them at 4 am.
No aircraft stays for 5.30 hours on the ground at Lima. If the crew stayed so long there then they would be far out of hours and the airline will be grounded and loose it's AOC licence.

More than 1 hours turnaround time and it's not worth doing the flight. It will lose money.

Rules for handling animals by the airlines are very strict. Even stricter than for people.

I think you misunderstood - No one said that the airplane was on the ground 5-1/2 hours. He said it took that long to get his dogs from the holding area.

Yes. We could see the dogs in the cargo area, but they wouldn't let us get the dogs out of the kennels until we got all the stamps and paid the right people. And because it was after hours, it took forever.
