Best place to watch fireworks on New Years Eve?

Postby katebruder » Tue Nov 19, 2013 2:47 pm

Hi all, just wondering where we would get great views of the city at midnight on New Years Eve to watch fireworks... I was thinking the Westin since it is has great views down Javier Prado but open to other suggestions (hotels/high-level restaurants/etc) as well.

Thanks!

Kate

Hi Kate

I'm sorry to say you are in for a big disappointment.
Lima itself doesn't have fireworks for New Years (like NYC, London, Berlin, etc. do). My husband and me went to Parque Salazar (above Larcomar) in 2012 hoping it would have something nice around. It was just a bunch of people lighting up their own fireworks. The problem was you don't know which are safe and which aren't. And a lot of people are irresponsible and don't acknowledge there are people, dogs and children around. Anyway... a very boring experience on the whole.

Personnaly, I would stay indoors as well and keep windows closed. People are just setting off fireworks in any direction.
And most of that firework is imported Chinese junk and it's unsafe as well.

New Years eve is very boring in Lima.
Better spend New Years eve in Tarapoto.
Every year, the plaza is very nicely decorated. At midnight everybody jumps on his motorbike and a parade of 100's of motorbikes circulates the plaza whilst blowing their horns.

Yes, Lima is definitely the place NOT to be on NYE. Most people who don't travel for NY go to Asia, or somewhere south and celebrate there. Honestly, not something I would be interested in (drunk teenagers yelling at eachother and too many drunk drivers).

It cheaper to go to NY. Flights from Peru to Asia are very expensive. Last year in June, I travelled to the Philippines and paid over $2200 for a roundtrip. With a bit of luck, you can go to NY for $1000.

NY: New Year's
NYE: New Year's Eve
Asia: Beach 95+ KM south of Lima

I didn't say people travel to New York or Asia (the continent) for new year's.

Well, there fireworks... a few years ago I had a flight arriving just before midnight, but it was delayed, so I had the nice experience of looking down on fireworks as we landed in Lima... but come to think of it they were scattered all around the town.

And no the flight was not from Asia :)

Oh, thanks for explaining.

Anyway, I'd rather spend New years eve in New York.

I think the concept of Silvester in Berlin is much more interesting; I've never spent New Year's in NYC, I think I would be afraid of being squashed by the crowd... maybe I'm wrong, but that is my main fear :(

Any building any where in Lima, Christmas Eve and New Years Eve. The sky explodes in fireworks both nights.

Take note of all the reports regarding the random " letting them off" without much regard to safety or the direction they might be aimed at.

Generally impressive though if you can get a good view and stay safe.

I think that any high building will be fine to watch the firework from.

But don't expect a beautifull showpiece like they do in some countries.

Thanks but I think we got off topic debating Asia/Tarapoto/NYC... I've been in Lima for the past few years and know it isn't going to be a big, fancy, organized show like other major cities.

We want to see the family/individual fireworks and I thought others might have an idea of a place to watch them. Our neighborhood has a lot of trees and we live on the second floor so it isn't the best place to watch from.
