Filter water against giardia et. al.

Postby emanaku » Sun Aug 03, 2014 5:43 pm

We are building a house in the Sacred Valley, and this question is about the fresh water system: We want to have a filter, so we can actually drink the water from the special filtered water tap.

The water comes from a glacier about 10km up the small side valley. It is getting clorinated, because the law says it should be.

I cannot find out what filter to buy.

After reading the information on (mainly) US-American websites where the recommendation is "a filter with 1 micron or less", I fail to find a filter with such specifications here in Cuzco.

I found a filter like Rotoplas PBT-01 (http://www.rotoplas.com.pe/nuestros-pro ... dor-debajo ). The marketing says you can drink the water and use it for your baby. But the only "hard fact" mentioned is that it is complying to the Mexican norm NOM-244-SSA1-2008 (http://dof.gob.mx/nota_detalle_popup.php?codigo=5108229 ).

Unfortunately I cannot figure out, if this norm protects consuments from giardia etc.

Maybe somebody has good hints? Or knows of a reliable brand of filters available in Peru (preferrably in Cusco ;-) )?

Thank you!

PS: I also read the postings here in the forum in the two topics viewtopic.php?t=7505 and viewtopic.php?t=11788 but they are mainly about Lima - and also some years old ... ;-)

No filter can keep out 100% of the diseases.

The best thing is to boil wáter before drinking it.

Ah, no. Times are a changing, chi chi, don't post everything Fred Flintstone told you.

emanaku, there are some excellent water purification systems (as opposed to just a filter), as I am sure you discovered, but sorry I can't speak to what is available in Peru.

I'm not aware of the latest filters available in Peru or to all that they can filter out, but I am a water engineer with some knowledge of water treatment in the tropics.

Guardia is caused by a parasite which is huge when compared with bacteria and virus. This is very easy to filter out and I know for certain that all ceramic filters would filter these out 15 years ago. When chichi talks about not preventing all diseases he may be thinking of the filtering out of all viruses. That wasn't possible 15 years ago but may be possible now.

thank you all!
chi-chi, I am aware of the advantages of boiling the water, but this does not remove chemicals (like the chlorine they put into the water - I really want it out there ... ;-) ). This very short list of the US-American CDC shows clearly the advantages of boiling: http://www.cdc.gov/healthywater/pdf/dri ... atment.pdf

Looking through the different websites victmanu has posted I realized that all devices with reverse osmosis should be fine.

I will do more research if any of these devices are available here in Cuzco.

Thank you very much - I will keep you updated how it will turn out ...

I recently bought a new water dispenser that also includes a water filter system from these guys:
https://www.edenagua.com
I was mostly worried about the heavy metals and bacteria that regular filters are not eliminating.

I contacted them directly through their facebook page https://www.facebook.com/edenagua

They are fluent in English so that was a great help!

Cheers
