Problems flying from Peru to US?

Postby woodchuck » Wed Mar 18, 2020 12:53 pm

Can anyone provide reliable info about flying from Peru to the US in the next 2 weeks?
Layover in Fort Lauderdale then on to final destination.
Are flights back to normal?
Any issues I should be aware of?
Thanks.

There are exceptional humanitarian flights being programmed to different countries. It is a developing scenario. Watch your countries embassy page. Hopefully they will have the good sense to provide the information there.

Again, it appears the US Embassy has failed its US residents in Peru.
When are they going to start doing what they are paid very well to do - help US citizens?
Thanks for the help.

The US Embassy in Lima is not replying to emails.
Is anyone else having this problem?
How are they affected by the emergency curfew?
Does anyone know more about the "humanitarian flights" that Alan has posted about?
Thanks.

The US State Department has recently been called out for their lack of responsiveness, and Peru was specifically mentioned.

This is not the first time this has happened in my 8 years of residence in Peru.
The US Embassy has to do better for US citizens.
How are the other embassies doing for their citizens?

From the Lima airport webpage:

Jorge Chavez International Airport will be kept closed throughout the entire quarantine period
The Peruvian government has decreed a state of national emergency, so the airport will be closed for the entire period of isolation and there is no access to the public. For flight rescheduling, please contact the airlines through their website or digital channels.

Best wishes, I hope the Peruvian government allows you to fly.
Here is an article from yahoo.com:

and then the Peruvian government, without any notice, canceled all flights. Shut the doors completely. It's practically a military state. You probably could see that the military and the police are out in the streets, and they're very, very hard on their citizens who are violating the quarantine right now.

Best wishes.

Can you say "there doesn't seem to be anything tyrannical or exaggerated about Peru's response?"

The problem is American citizens are restricted from all International travel now. You are only allowed to return to your country of residence.

As I understand the situation, Americans have to fly into an aport approved for testing for Covid-19.
If I remember correctly, there are less than 10 of these testing airports.

So they're emailing everyone?
Did you get an email?

If your destination is London, this might have been an option.
This was a private venture & it appears the cost was exorbitant:

Coronavirus: British Embassy in Peru tells stranded tourists to pay £3,000 each to get home

At least the British Embassy did something.

The USA in conjunction with the Peruvian Air Force flew out 500 American tourists this weekend and brought back 250 Peruvians stranded in Florida!

It appears the US Embassy has finally taken an active role in assisting US citizens who want to return to the US.

"We understand that quarantine hinders movements to the airport. The United States Embassy continues to negotiate these details with the Peruvian Government and local authorities so that the citizens of the United States have a safe and unobstructed passage to airports," said the message.

British citizens will have the opportunity to return to the UK by flying out of a military airbase soon.
