Do you think peruvians are very cliquey?

I realised that many peruvians don't go outside their small circle of friends. I don't know if it has happened to you but when I went to the beach to make new friends I failed as most people just would not want to welcome outsiders to their social groups.

and on top of that our Government as a whole is corrupt and extracts money from everybody
through several means. It is obvious that anybody will surround itself with a limited number of
people that can be trusted. Sometimes even whole families separate.

Sometimes you cannot even trust family members, relatives and "friends".
However, this happens everywhere - not only in Peru.

I experienced the same. It's actually very easy to meet new people.

I think Ragnorak went to the beach in Miraflores or San Isidro. Those pitucas that hang around there don't like to socialise with 'plebs'.

Not at all... unless you consider their families a clique.

In general very warm and open with their hearts and homes. However maybe i could see how folks in lima would be less likely to socialize with a new contact. This is something that may just take a little practice at, find something in common. Best of luck meeting good folks and maybe just be a little cautious about who, when, n where. Truthfully i thought it was better to keep a low profile and preferred quality friends over quantity. Sharing a common interest does help, like surfing for example, i always made friends quickly and easily in the water.

Lived in Pueblo Libre, Magdelena, San MIguel, CHiclayo, Pimentel. But when I moved to Miraflores, there is a certain amount of class-ism, people do not associate with foreigners readily. All the other places , no problem, very open and friendly neighbors.


Peruvians in general are very friendly, I especially enjoy my conversations with the cab drivers.

My wife and I were planning to get pregnant and I already had 4 boys.
He told me that I had to make love in the kitchen to have a girl.
He said it worked for him after 5 boys. LOL.....

So much for the kitchen thing, I end up have another son (Tommy) LOL....

You get some pretty amazing stories from cab drivers.

People im Lima can be REALLY cliquey, speacially in certains circuls like top schools or Unies. But it happend everywhere in the world. Its really funny when you approach to those kind of girls and first question they ask you is: in wich school did you study??? next question: in wich uni. do you study??? ouchhh!!!

But in another hand is honest to say in general ppl in Peru are very open, speacially with overseas guys. Ppl always wanna know where are you from or what language you speak, not like in another places (few) when you speak in spanish or another language some dumd guys goes.... speak in english....

I know of one huge brand where all the staff are from one or two universities and jobs advertised to keep the ministry happy and then given to the CFO's Aunt's cat whenever the reccomendation comes along.

In terms of friends groups, there is not much social class mixing at all so in that sense its cliquey. But generaly not more cliquey than other countries, try going to a local scottish pub and being a mate of everyone and you will see what cliquey means!

Business actually is more cliquey than that, sometimes you find whole families working
at a company in the same department, whenever a position opens they do not hire the most
qualified applicant but the unemployed family member. Then the same company complains why they
are not more productive and competitive compared to foreign companies. Many of these companies
that are full of incompetent workers hire temporary personnel for their projects. Squeeze out every
ounce of productivity of these underpaid desperate people (who are there under the promise of getting
a steady Job) and then they fire them as soon as the project is completed. The credit goes to the
lazy ones on the company and they start the hiring process back again to get a new batch of desperate
clowns to do all the hard work for them.

Somebody should post a balanced history of the millionaires in Peru for the last 60 years and everybody
will notice the repetitive patterns used every 5 or 10 years.

Some interesting comments posted, most of which sound on the ball to me, but I have to say, unless you're in a small town or a place with lots of backpackers, approaching strangers on a beach in a big city will probably strike most people as a bit creepy. That's pretty natural for most big cities and no comment on you - I'm sure you're a nice person - or on Lima. It's natural to be suspicious of strangers in almost all big cities. Just take a look at this guy. He's been in the news in Peru nonstop for the last few years. Memories are still fresh.

YES, I am confused by the reaction of many as I am the classic 'PEOPLE PERSON".
I go out of my way to make people I meet - HAVE A BETTER DAY; with a smile, kind word/compliment.
I appreciate the "common worker", as I have been on a lower class-upper middle-LOWER MID class journey.

It is AMAZING how many "new" friends I made, after a successful venture in REAL ESTATE & MARKETING!!!
I joined the BUSINESS/SOCIAL ORGANIZATIONS that required some investment (dinners, trips, etc.); my kids went skiing in Vermont & had horses, my former wife & I had nice pool parties, etc...

But I still relish the "LITTLE GUYS" that were & continue to be my TRUE FRIENDS; that's why I studied the law & the legal filing process - to be a CONSUMER ADVOCATE. Naturally, this "pissed off" the establishment of the attorneys & judges; as "how dare" the common-folk have a chance to have a successful legal claim & VERDICT!

Such is life... (there is a French term for this, but not sure how to spell - "se la vie"???)
